Tanzania’s ambition to build a stronger domestic iron and steel industry is beginning to move from planning into physical implementation.

The **$77.4 million Maganga Matitu Iron Ore Project in Ludewa District, Njombe Region, has entered the construction phase**, with mining equipment arriving at the site and electricity infrastructure already connected.

The project, implemented through a joint venture involving Tanzania’s National Development Corporation (NDC) and Fujian Hexingwang Industry Tanzania Co. Ltd, is expected to produce approximately **one million tonnes of raw iron annually** for use by local steel manufacturers.

## Beyond Mining

The significance of the project goes beyond extracting iron ore.

For Tanzania, the larger opportunity is to build a domestic industrial value chain connecting mineral resources with processing, manufacturing, infrastructure development and employment.

A stronger local iron and steel industry could help reduce dependence on imported industrial inputs while creating opportunities across construction, transport, logistics, engineering and supporting services.

The Maganga Matitu project is expected to generate approximately **300 direct jobs and 700 indirect jobs**, alongside additional commercial opportunities for businesses providing transport, construction materials, security and other services.

## A Bigger Industrial Story Is Emerging

Maganga Matitu is developing at a time when the long-awaited **Mchuchuma–Liganga integrated project**, also located in Ludewa, is progressing towards implementation.

The approximately **$3 billion development** is planned to combine coal mining, iron ore extraction, mineral beneficiation, steel production and a proposed **600MW power plant**.

Together, these developments could contribute to the creation of a much wider industrial ecosystem around Tanzania’s mineral resources.

The opportunity is no longer simply about extracting minerals.

It is about building a complete value chain:

**Mining → Processing → Steel Manufacturing → Infrastructure → Construction → Regional Trade**

## Why It Matters

Demand for steel across Tanzania and the wider East African region continues to grow as governments and private investors expand transport infrastructure, housing, energy projects, industrial facilities and urban development.

Building competitive domestic production could position Tanzania not only to meet more of its own industrial demand, but also to participate more strongly in regional supply chains.

The greater economic value will come from transforming mineral resources into locally processed products, industries, businesses and sustainable employment.

## ADFAX Perspective

Tanzania has significant mineral potential.

The next test is execution.

Investment commitments and mineral reserves establish opportunity, but lasting economic transformation happens when those resources are converted into operating mines, processing facilities, factories, supporting businesses and jobs.

**Tanzania’s iron and steel story may therefore be entering one of its most important stages yet — moving from resource potential to industrial production.**
